Frequent Questions
Here are some answers to questions we routinely receive at the Department.
Can I burn trash or construction debris?
No, it is against Arkansas State Law to burn any man-made materials including household trash and construction debris. Please see this link for the state law on open burning. You can only burn natural vegetation.
Can I burn leaves, sticks, brush?
Yes, you may burn residential yard waste in the city limits and county as long as the weather conditions are favorable and there is no burn ban. This includes leaves, grass clippings, sticks, branches, brush, etc.
Can I donate my home or mobile home to burn for training purposes?
No. The Mayflower Fire Department will not accept donated homes for training purposes. We commonly get asked to burn down old homes so homeowners can avoid the expense of having it legally demolished.
However, in order to accept a home to burn for training you must have the home tested for asbestos and cleared by the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality. The regulatory burden to do it properly can be burdensome and the condition of most donated homes is a liability for our Department to train in/on.
Reminder: It is against the law to burn down your own home or property. We will issue citations for burning anything that is not natural vegetation.
Will the fire department fill my swinning pool?
No, we cannot fill your swimming pool even for “training purposes.” The water that is stored in our booster tanks can get very dirty and you do not want that water in your pool. Additionally, the water we receive from fire hydrants is for emergency use only and cannot be “donated” to private households.
Can I shoot fireworks in the city limits?
Fireworks may only discharged within the city of Mayflower on July 4th of each year from 10:30 AM to 10:30 PM and only around groups of 20 or fewer people.
